The elevator descended into the Vault, plummeting deeper down into the floating borough. Odelia stood ramrod straight, operating the lever on the elevator.

Something in Paisley’s understanding had shifted since speaking to the Grand Mistress. She was sure that she was beginning to understand it all. The Dark Dragon had stolen Soul Fire from the North, just like she had stolen Mother. She was convinced that Comet Wolstenholme was a Great Dragon and she needed Mother to perform her experiment again, but she was missing something …

Next to her, Dax began to chatter away in a low whisper. “I do enjoy our chats with Mistress Io; she always has important things to say, and it was fun to tell Corbett the story of the Soul Sisters and everything, but it doesn’t leave us much time to look for …”

Paisley’s eyes widened, and she shot a look at Dax at the same time he looked up at her in disbelief. “The Heart Stone!” they whispered in unison.

Paisley instantly questioned it and then shook her head. How could it be anything else? The Heart Stone, the dark diamond that made up Grandmama Fiona’s necklace, had to be part of Anu’s Soul.

Paisley shot a look over at Corbett; he looked at her, puzzled. She darted a look at the Dragon Walker—neither of them seemed to have made the connection. She looked back at Dax, who was biting his lip in a state of agitated excitement.

The elevator came to a smooth stop, and the doors slid open.

“Not a word,” she whispered to Dax as Odelia stepped out of the elevator.

Beyond them was darkness, and who knew what lay in it, what the Dark Dragon was capable of? Sweat collected on the back of Paisley’s neck as she thought of the darkness of the Veil, of the golden points on her wrists. She took Dax’s hand and squeezed it, and he squeezed hers back.

Small red lights dotted on the wall grew in intensity as Odelia stepped toward them. They burned like small electrica fires, flickering and twisting, each one sparking into life as Odelia moved farther into the darkness.

Soon the stone-like walls were littered with small electrica bonfires, illuminating a vast, cave-like hall.

If she hadn’t known for certain that they were still on the floating borough, Paisley would have thought that they were under the Earth. The walls of the hall looked as if they had been hewn from rock, rough and strong and cold. She gave a little shiver as they moved forward. Her eyes adjusted to the light; her flesh pimpled with cold and wariness. The air smelled of charcoal and tasted earthy.

The torches gave off no warmth or cheer. Paisley wanted to wrap her brown woolen coat around her but instead undid it, allowing it to flow open and giving her quick access to her father’s sword and free movement, should she need both; the threat of the Dark Dragon suddenly felt more real.

She followed Odelia out of the elevator, in front of Dax, and cast her eyes around.
